What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an innovative, evidence-based approach that combines the therapeutic effects of ketamine with guided psychotherapy to support healing, insight, and lasting change. KAP can be especially helpful for individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, or feeling “stuck” despite traditional approaches.

This process is thoughtfully structured to ensure safety, comfort, and meaningful integration.

What to Expect

1. Preparation Sessions (1–2 sessions)
We begin with one to two preparation sessions where we get to know your story, clarify your intentions, and build a foundation of trust and safety. During this time, you’ll learn what to expect from ketamine, explore your goals, and develop tools to help you navigate your experience.

2. Medical Evaluation & Prescription (via Journey Clinical)
You will be connected with a licensed medical provider through Journey Clinical who will assess your eligibility and, if appropriate, prescribe ketamine. In some cases, insurance may be applied to the medical portion of treatment.

3. Guided KAP Session (3 hours)
Your KAP session is a carefully supported therapeutic experience lasting approximately three hours. In a comfortable and calming environment (in-person or remote), you’ll take your prescribed dose while I provide guidance and support throughout the journey. This experience often allows for deeper emotional access, new perspectives, and meaningful breakthroughs.

4. Integration Sessions
Integration is where lasting change happens. In follow-up sessions, we’ll process your experience, explore insights, and translate them into practical, meaningful changes in your daily life. These sessions help anchor the work so it continues beyond the KAP experience.

A Personalized Process

While each person’s journey is unique, many clients benefit from a series of 6–8 KAP sessions over time. The process is flexible and can be tailored to meet your specific needs, pace, and goals.

KAP Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

KAP is a therapeutic approach that combines ketamine with psychotherapy to support deeper emotional processing, insight, and healing. • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Trauma or PTSD

  • Grief or loss

  • Feeling “stuck” or disconnected

It is often considered when other forms of therapy or medication have not provided the desired relief.

KAP includes several phases:

  1. Preparation sessions (1–2 sessions)

  2. Medical evaluation and prescription through Journey Clinical

  3. A guided KAP session (approximately 3 hours)

  4. Integration sessions to process and apply insights

Is ketamine safe?

Ketamine has been used safely in medical settings for decades. In KAP, it is prescribed and monitored by a licensed medical provider. We follow established protocols to prioritize your safety and well-being throughout the process.

Will I lose control during a session?

Most clients remain aware of their experience, though it may feel different from ordinary consciousness. You are supported the entire time, and we emphasize preparation so you feel grounded and safe going into the session.

What does a KAP session feel like?

Experiences vary, but many clients describe:

  • A sense of relaxation or detachment from usual thought patterns

  • Increased emotional openness

  • Visual or reflective experiences

  • A shift in perspective

Each experience is unique and guided by your intentions.

Do I need someone with me?

Yes.

  • In-person sessions: You will need transportation to and from your appointment.

  • Remote sessions: A trusted support person (chaperone) must be present with you during the experience.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients benefit from a series of 6–8 sessions, though this can vary. Your treatment plan is personalized based on your goals and how you respond to the process.

What are integration sessions and why are they important?

Integration sessions help you make sense of your experience and apply insights to your daily life. This is where deeper, lasting change is supported and reinforced.

Is this covered by insurance?

The medical portion (through Journey Clinical) may be eligible for insurance coverage in some cases. Therapy sessions are typically self-pay, though you may be able to use out-of-network benefits depending on your plan.
